So Wrong

Hubby and Bug are napping contentedly, and for some reason I am unable to settle myself in for a nap. It is especially vexsome because they kept me up for half the night, between the former's snoring and the latter's crying.

This is my vacation, I'm supposed to get MORE sleep not LESS. ARGH.

Insert Qbert-esque profanities here.

Have Kindle, will...

I am composing this on my Kindle 3G.

This is actually my second attempt. At first I tried to change to article mode to get a better view but that only resulted in an error message and me losing my post in its infancy. Zooming in was a better choice until I reached the end of a line. Then the screen went black with the entry of each additional letter as the screen tried to pan over.

So, while this is possible on a Kindle there are definitely some pitfalls. I hope to continue to utilize the experimental Kindle browser and post my impressions here. I did not see many in depth reviews od it while I was researching the Kindle, it is a BOOK READER after all.

But,without a laptop, tablet, netbook, or smart phone at my disposal I intend to stretch the usefullness of this device as far as it will go.

Dreams and Intentions

I had a dream that a friend was pregnant. I had a dream that I grew a strawberry the size of an apple. I'm not sure why I had such fruitful dreams, or what, if anything, they portend.

This week I intend to go to the Y at some point. If I don't, then my purchase of membership will not have been a good idea. My thinking was mainly that I would be able to take Bug swimming in the dead of winter. I know she gets antsy in our ~900 sq foot home, and she isn't a big fan of cold and snow at her age.

Though I might occasionally take advantage of their drop-off child care to run on a treadmill or heck, just read a book. That book would be read electronically of course, on my new Kindle 3g.

I also intend to clean house over the next few days. It needs it, in a big way. Though I am somehow loathe to put away the Christmas decor. Our little tree has been quite pretty this year.

What am I?

I'm not an athiest. I believe there is a higher power, though I hesitate to use the loaded term, "god"

I'm not agnostic. I firmly believe in the wonder and mysticism of the universe, not as created by a higher power, but as an aspect of that... divine force itself.

I'm not a deist, though this label may be the closest of all. They believe in a more humanized story of creation as unfolded by the mind of God. Their God and its actions are too anthropomorphized for my tastes.

I don't believe in a pantheon. While nature is surely a central aspect of my spirituality, I don't divide its forces into separate Gods.

I don't think there is any need to mention Christianity here.

So, what does that leave? And, why do I feel a need to label it at all?

WTB Sleep

I knew, intellectually, that having a child would mean a sleep tradeoff. What I did not know or realize was just how much sleep meant to me, nor how extended that tradeoff would be. I always had as much sleep as I wanted, more or less. Any deficit typically resolved itself within the next day or two, and it was all good.

Now, I find myself having missed approximately 1/3 of the sleep I would normally have had over the past year. 8 hours per night, times 365 days, divided by 3. That's 973 hours of sleep, or 40 entire days of sleep.

This may explain why, last night, I had a dream in which I was very very tired. Then, Bug woke at 4am (after her typical 3am waking) and would not go back to sleep except in bed with me, where I proceeded to stir every 45 minutes to make sure she was not suffocating, falling off the bed, or otherwise in some sort of danger. She was none of those things, of course. She was however, wide awake at 7am.

Showoff fail

I brought bug's lovingly hand-knit slippers to my parents house to show them off. I admit that I am proud of finding a decent pattern on the internet, researching how to read and execute said pattern, then making modifications for size, THEN applying puffy paint for super awesome traction.

In a silly fashion, like a child with a project crafted at school, I've been showing them off to everyone who could spare a few moments to glance in my general direction. It was only natural that I show my mom, even though Bug had no need for them at grandma's house. Actually, it was only her feet that had no need of the slippers. Her toddler spirit had its way with them, as she threw them to the carpet repeatedly. They entertained her muchly with their matter-like observation of the law of gravity.

On the carpet, behind the coffee table... That's where they remained as we left the grandparents' house.

At least mom and I are planning an outing on Tuesday and I'll retrieve them then. In the mean time, she'll have to make do with socks. I'm sorry bug, your mother is occasionally a showoff, to your detriment.

Thirteen gifts

Thirteen things I've purchased for friends and family this season:

1. Blind Side DVD
2. Snuggie (it was requested, specifically)
3. Sweats
4. Socks (stuffed with gift card)
5. Gift Card
6. Photo calendars for grandparents (can't wait to pick them up from Costco!)
7. Overshirt
8. Shaver
9. Mug
10. Talking book
11. Educational DVD
12. Winter hat
13. Jewelry

I actually had a bit of trouble there toward the end! But, I don't think I've spent a terrible amount of money this year despite having a toddler to spoil. I've tried to keep gifts for other family members much more reasonable. I didn't go overboard on my sister in law, or my parents, none of whom were very forthcoming about what they wanted.

Something I forgot to mention... I bought my niece two outfits and a book. Part of me wants to buy even more, but we're also going to hand a bunch of stuff down to her so that makes me feel better. :)

Thursday Thirteen

Bummer. I'm low on sleep and I can't get back to sleep. Mainly, I'm slightly wired due to all of the things in my brain. On the bright side, it is Thursday now and I can label them for my Thursday Thirteen!

Thirteen Things Keeping Me Awake

1. Hunger. Hubby threw a pizza in the oven for his late night meal and I'm starving. So, I'm awake eating a slice.

2. Brain processing impending move of my office space to "the big house". It's a good career move, but I cannot unabashedly celebrate for various reasons, not all of which are known to me.

3. Do I hear the baby crying?

4. I need to make the photo-related gift for the grandparents. It takes 10 days to process.

5. I need to do more shopping for hubby for xmas.

6. I need to order stuff for my sister in law for xmas.

7. I need to get another gift for my mom and dad too.

8. Office drama, that doesn't directly involve me but...

9. She woke up. I gave her some milk. She was snoozing. I tried to put her down in her crib. Now she's up crying. Sigh.

10. Forms I need to revise at work, that have needed revision for 2 weeks now

11. A sudoku puzzle that I spent 25 minutes solving before getting out of bed to write this and eat pizza.

12. Alternately being cold and hot in bed. Snuggle hubby? Turn on electric blanket?

13. She's still crying. She had 3 good nights of sleep but tonight? ARGH. Now I have to go back to agonizing over what to do about the sleep issues. Blah.

Thursday Thirteen

Because without an occasional fluff post, I would not post often enough.

My theme this week is: Thirteen things I chose to type into my blog on 12/2/2010

1. Posting one-handed
2. I needed my free hand to hold bug and the "On Investing" magazine she was reading
3. ok, its more of an advertisement bespeaking the glories of Charles Schwab
4. Bug elevates it greatly by calling it "book"
5. She just insulted me by calling a picture of Condoleeza Rice, "Mom"
6. Now she wants to do number 6 fl, ,;l t ocyc86 c8 w
7. And 7 jbdug[lplck/okl-[
8. Cocoa is awesome, why are my feet so cold?
9. Ginger Snappish tea by Bigelow is not half bad
10. I completed #9 about an hour after #8
11. Leftover spaghetti was a damn good idea
12. Joy would be an uninterrupted hour to read a book
13. Lately I fall asleep after 10 minutes, and I need the sleep badly.

first!

I remember how people used to post "first!" in response to quick moving threads in online gaming forums. I bet they still do that. Occasionally I feel some MMORPG nostalgia... but that doesn't mean I would really enjoy playing.

Despite the personality deficits that the creation of a new blog might suggest... I have a real life now.

Part of that real life will be notated here. Mainly, the part that is hoping my 14mo old daughter isn't getting into something awful while I'm here typing at the keyboard. I already coaxed a pack of gum from her eager digits. I knew she was being too quiet. She's quiet again now, aside from some suspicious rustling. It sounds vaguely like danger or doom or disaster area.

I used to think a "disaster area" was just a clever term my parents used to describe my room (and every other room in the house). It was only recently, in my 3rd decade of life, that I came upon the knowledge of a "disaster area" as a piece of official terminology, complete with its own wikipedia entry.
